- 4–8 inch: accent boulders, focal points, larger drainage features
- Pea gravel (small smooth round stone): patios, play areas, pet runs
River Rock vs. Mulch — Tradeoffs
Mulch is cheaper upfront and adds organic matter to the soil, but it breaks down and needs replacing every year or two. River rock is more expensive upfront but lasts effectively forever — you might add a thin top-off every several years if leaves and dirt build up.
For high-traffic areas, splash zones, or anywhere mulch keeps washing away, river rock is usually the better long-term call.
Lay It Over Fabric
For landscape beds, lay quality woven landscape fabric down first, then river rock on top. The fabric stops weeds from coming up through and keeps the rock from sinking into the soil. We can advise on this when we deliver.
How We Price It
Decorative stone costs more per ton than crusher run because of the processing and sourcing. We quote in writing based on the size, quantity, and delivery distance. Here's how our quotes work.
